About Us

Welcome to EAA Chapter 1712… one of the Experimental Aircraft’s newest chapters!!!!… also known as “The Fun Chapter!” Although we’re new, we are strong… with 45 members and growing.

Located at the Riverside Municipal Airport in Riverside, CA., we are an aviation family of both young and old, who are community oriented, while supporting EAA’s mission statement of “Promoting Aviation Through Participation.” We have an active membership and a very enthusiastic Board of Directors who are excited about our potential, our momentum and the EAA programs that we will be bringing to reality in short order. Our members count, their opinions matter, and improvement is always a goal. Come see for yourself!

Along with our monthly Young Eagles rallies each 2nd Saturday of each month, and our Chapter Gatherings on the 1st Tuesday of each month, our members participate in fly-outs where flying and camping is on the docket, and by supporting other chapters in the area at their events to name a few.

We want to extend a warm WELCOME to all who have an interest in aviation! You don’t have to be a pilot, just someone who loves airplanes and aviation in general. In fact… many members aren’t pilots! Parents…. If your child or children have any interest in aviation, we encourage you to bring them to us. Come attend a chapter gathering or a Young Eagles rally, as there are many opportunities to volunteer and learn the value of doing something for others, as well as opportunities to fly with us more often. Let us show them a world much bigger than video games!

Check out our website tab for our Young Eagles program and learn how to register for an upcoming rally.

Young Eagles

What is Young Eagles?

EAA Chapter 1712 Young Eagles program is a unique way of welcoming young people to the wonder, exhilaration and freedom of flight. The program is sponsored by EAA, a non-profit national organization, dedicated to providing a motivational aviation experience for the younger generation.

The initial goal of the EAA National Young Eagles Program was achieved by flying one million children by the year 2003 – the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brother’s flight at Kitty Hawk. The program has been so successful that it has been extended indefinitely and to date EAA chapters have flown nearly 2.5 million kids!!. EAA Chapter 1712 continues to participate in this exciting program, offering truly unforgettable experience of flying in the Inland Empire. Each year we fly 150+ kids – for free. The Young Eagles program is for youngsters ages 8 – 17 years.

We schedule our Young Eagles Rallies on the 2nd Saturday of each month, but occasionally we move it for special circumstances.

We make every effort to make these dates and to operate flights per this schedule. However, there are some circumstances beyond our control, primarily weather.

How Do I Register My Kids for a Flight?

Registration is done solely online. To register, please go to events.eaachapters.org. We usually open that month’s registrations early in the month, so that’s the best time to log on and register. Once registered, and a few days prior to the rally, you will receive an email asking for you to confirm, and if you don’t confirm, we will offer that space to someone on the waiting list. It fills up fast, and your confirmation is critical so we can fly as many youth’s as possible.

How Do The Flights Work?

We start at 8am usually, but typically start at 7am in the summer months to avoid the heat as much as possible. Before flying, the Young Eagles (and parents!) are given an event overview, safety issues discussion and presentation of the airplane, it’s flight controls, instruments, how it flies and instructions for the 30 minute flight. Each flight takes place in a registered airplane flown by a licensed, experienced EAA General Aviation pilot, who volunteer their time, their aircraft and their expertise to provide the opportunity of safe flight experience to kids. Standard maneuvers are performed during the flight and are provided FREE OF CHARGE! After the flight, flight certificates and flight log books (signed by the pilot) are awarded to the new Young Eagle, as well as guidance on where to get more information to continue the experience of flying, including online required instruction at no cost.

Meet Our Board Members

Jim

Jim O'Brein

President

I’ve been an EAA Lifetime member since 2012, because of my commitment to who and what EAA is. I’m all about sharing my aviation life, especially to first-timers, kids and adults alike. It’s a lot of work being your president, but you all are well worth it. It’s you who make 1712 great… and FUN!.

Jim

Jimmy O'Brein

Vice President

I’m the Vice President of EAA Chapter 1712 and an aircraft mechanic with a passion for aviation. I love sharing the joy of flight through the Young Eagles program, and I’ve had the privilege of flying over 300 missions to inspire the next generation of aviators.

dustin

Dustin Rhymes

Secretary

I am a professional pilot, flight instructor, and advocate for all things involving general aviation. I own a 1955 Cessna 170B which gets used for family trips, Young Eagles flights, and passing over traffic when flying to the office. Being a part of Chapter 1712 has been a great experience. I look forward to watching the chapter grow!

ROBERTA

Roberta Phillips

Young Eagles Coordinator

I have proudly served EAA and there Young Eagles programs since 2011. I believe the benefits of exposing children to the world of aviation and the opportunities it holds is priceless!

rich

Rich Fish

Treasurer

I’m the treasurer for EAA Chapter 1712 and a big fan of all things aviation and especially back country aviation. I’ve been involved with aviation since about 2021 and acquired my interest during the COVID lock down flying and building radio control airplanes until I decided to actually learn to fly and build one I can actually ride in! I am currently building my own experimental airplane, which has been an awesome (and humbling) learning experience. With 1712, I’m all about connecting with others who love to build, fly, and talk airplanes.

Loreen Wynja

Board Member

I started taking flying lessons at Flabob, June 1998 as a gift to myself after completing graduate school with a Masters in Nursing and Clinical Nurse Specialist. I obtained my PPL in Nov 1998 and my instrument rating in 2000. I have a Cessna 172 hangered at KRAL. I fly for fun and enjoy flying Young Eagles. My goals for Chapter 1712 are to continue to grow in membership, to continue to make flying enjoyable and to keep sharing aviation with others.
